Protect your Files by Using a Screen Saver Password

Use the following steps to protect your files by using a screen saver password.

  1. Click Start > Control Panel.

  2. In the Control Panel dialog, click Appearance and Themes.

NOTE: If your system is configured for the Classic View you can skip this step.

  3. Click or double-click Display.

  4. In the Display Properties dialog, click the Screen Saver tab.

  5. In the Screen saver field, select a Screen Saver, as needed.

  6. In the Wait field, enter the amount of Minutes you want the system to wait before displaying the screen saver.

  7. Check the On resume, password protect option. Selecting this option will lock your computer when the screen saver is activated. When you begin working again you will be prompted to enter your password to unlock your computer. Your screen saver password is the same as your log on password. If you do not use a password to log on to your computer, you cannot set a screen saver password.

NOTE: If Fast User Switching is turned on, select the On resume, display Welcome screen option. Fast User Switching is only available for stand-alone computers and users in a work group. It is not available if your computer is part of a network domain.
